So I introduce you to my Sunday Happenings, you know basically some interiors out in the world I'm currently loving, some music, food, anything I love talking about here. I'm excited and will be aiming to post these each Sunday with a new weeks full of things I'm currently crushing on. I'm excited about this new push at being a design (and such as) blogger. So here is week one of my Sunday Happenings.

1) I have to start with interiors right, I mean first and foremost this is a blog about Interior Design. So, I'm currently crushing hard on Parisian Art Deco style thats currently massive on Pinterest right now. My last home was very minimal and had a natural palette with pops of colours here and there. I'm currently coming up with a design plan for my home now and will be sharing that in the coming weeks, but its going to be totally different then my Ashland Home and have some major inspiration from this Parisian Art Deco look. This photo is a major push on the Parisian look.

2) If you ever take a road trip with me you better believe I'm blasting some 90s and early 2000's music. I love pop music on car rides with others most of the time because its good music to sing along to and dance with. However when I'm driving alone or just enjoying actual music I've been into a interesting genre for a while now. This song came on a radio playlist I have for the band Gramatik. I guess you could call this genre of music a bit hip hop but I think I like to call the style I'm into as Electro Swing. Some other great bands to check out in this genre are Parov Stelar, and Jamie Berry. So when this song by The Polish Ambassador came on today I kept turning it up more and more and before the song was done I had added it to my library.

3) A few months ago I purchased a pair of Rebeca Minkoff sneakers at a TJ Maxx and my life changed. I always have enjoyed taking some risks with my fashion but have never dabbled in the metallic area for fashion besides my jewelry. So when I fell for these metallic rose gold slip on sneakers my obsession with metallic shoes started. I've found myself looking at fun metallic shoes since this purchase and constantly have to stop myself from doubling my shoe collection with metallic shoes. Here are the shoes I purchased and while I'd show you a picture of my actual shoes I've worn them so much they don't look this pretty anymore but still very pretty.
4) I'm a sucker for some good floral arrangements in your home. I know it can be a lot to keep up with if you don't have the best green thumb but thats on my 2018 New Years resolution (I'm giving myself some month to prep, you know how it goes) I have a full board on my Pinterest page of floral arrangements and they are some fun floral arrangements if you ask me. This particular one has been a favorite of mine for a while now, I like how fun it is but could work great in really any room of your home.

5) Lastly I couldn't not talk about food could I. I'm actually heading to Smorgasburg in Brooklyn today, so by the time this blog goes up I'll probably be stuffing my face with some amazing food. A few years ago I went to visit my girl Alyssa for her 21st birthday in Seattle (hard to believe that was nine years ago now) and she took me to Pike Place Market which is a must so duh she took me there. Anyways she introduced me to my first Vietnamese Sandwich or a Bánh mì. I'm particular to the shredded pork version with fish sauce and you better believe I'll be on the hunt at Smorgasburg today. I'll make sure to update my Instagram when I find the winner. So I recently went on the search for some recipes to help my Canadian and American self know how to make one for myself. I haven't tried this recipe yet so I'll leave an update once it has been tested and Jess approved or not.

So thats what I'm all about this week, next week I would expect would be a bit different you know how that works. Maybe I'll even talk about things that happened in my past week that'd always be so super exciting right. I'm heading to NY Now tomorrow and will make sure to post about some great things I see, the total solar eclipse happens on Monday as well and I'll be listing to Bonnie Tyler-Total Eclipse of the heart when its in full coverage, apparently some people along this cruise will be listing to her live at the total coverage as well (this is brilliant and whoever came up with this idea deserves a major raise)

Hope you all have a great week and wish me luck this week on posting more often!!

There is this photo of this kitchen which I'm obsessed over (its below) and I love the modern take on the shaker cabinets. But what really attracted to me this kitchen is how soothing the room is. The different materials and textures all blend together so nicely so I knew I needed to look at more work from the designer Liljencrantz Design, and I was very happy I looked at more work. ITS AMAZING!!!

All of their work is soothing and I love all the different textures. Its a great modern Scandinavian style and it works so well. I like to use other designers work as inspiration as most designers do, but I really pay attention on how designers use different elements and merge them together, so Liljencrantz Design is a great resource because the different elements of metal, glass, wood, textiles all work very well together.

I'm loving this designer and I'll be defiantly keeping up with them for more work they come up with. I hope you all enjoy these photos as well.
And here we are, Its Friday which also means its Saint Patricks Day. Everyone is wearing green shirts, the lady at Costco was wearing a sparkly green plastic top hat and everyone is excited and happy. I honestly love the simple holidays that are just a fun reason to get together with friends and family and just have a blast together. Anyways I've left the most fun for last.... KITCHENS!!!!

Green kitchens are booming right now and a lot of people are joining the bang wagon because why not, they look great!!!! I've collected a lot of different shades of kitchens for you all, but a lot are from a kitchen company out of the United Kingdom called DeVol Kitchens, they pretty much are the company to aim to be like. They are so classically done and have the timeless elegance of an old english cottage but also have the fun fresh look of a 21st century kitchen. They also are known for some of the hottest "green" kitchens out there today. So it was a no brainer that half of the kitchens I'm showing off today are from DeVol Kitchens. Check them out: DeVol Kitchens

We are past the halfway point, tomorrow is Saint Patrick's day and I'm excited for some Guinness and some banger and mash. Its always a fun time and as someone that lived in Chicago last year I missed seeing the river dyed green this year. Maybe we should start a charity to dye Lake Champlain green, that might be a little interesting though...I mean Champ is already green so we might make some of the lampreys green but Champ should be fine still. This is probably one of the worst ideas I've ever had, good thing I'm an interior designer and not someone who comes up with how to celebrate holidays.
They are not the Kaare Klint Safari Chairs but made by Gold Medal Folding Furniture Company. I got them for a good deal but need to fix them up big time. As you can see one is a light blue and one is red Vinyl thats dirty and falling apart. The blue chair has a big rip down the middle of the seat and the vinyl is filthy.

I originally had plans on having someone in Vermont reupholstering the chairs for me, but I got this job in Chicago and was never able to get the chairs to her in time. Now I'm here in Chicago and just spent a bundle load on moving expenses but really want to get these chairs fixed up at the same time. I had a hard time deciding on if I wanted to buy a hide of leather and upholster the chairs in leather or if I was fine with buying a good vinyl in the meantime and maybe in 5 years reupholster them again in leather. I've landed on buying vinyl. I've decided on an Architex- Authentec Vinyl called Dakota- Colour Trail Blazer.

So now that I've decided on the vinyl finish and colour it came down to finding someone to reupholster the chairs, but before I even sent photos to places I thought hmm your hands on maybe you could do this work. Save yourself a bunch of money and then you can say you did the work yourself. So thats where I'm at, I've bought myself a sewing machine and I plan on today practicing my seams since I have not sewn since high school over ten years ago.

The photo above is a photo of the same type of Safari chair I have on FirstDibs, which were already sold so I couldn't find out how much they went for. I plan on stripping the wood legs myself and staining them to a similar finish, and I plan on making a few tweaks to make them a bit more to my liking. I'm really excited for this project and hopefully I don't screw it up where I eventually need to go to get it done professionally. I am feeling pretty confident the only part i'm worried about is the metal brackets that hold the chair together, they are a bit rusted but I'll look into how to fix that.

Heres to having some awesome chairs in a month or so hopefully!!!!
I'm a huge Pinterest user. I use it for work, I use it for my daily life, and I even pin right before bed while curled up with my phone until I doze off. So you better believe when a photo that inspires me comes up on one of the many blogs and websites I read that Pinterest button is getting some use.

So when I was reading Domaine Home a couple weeks back and saw this image I immedetly hit that pin button. The design wheels in my head starting spinning and I got to thinking how can I make something similar but with my own twist. You see I'm a huge origami lover, I've been folding for about five years now and it's a therapeutic activity for me. I started with the crane and moved into tesselation type origami.

I've had the idea for a while on how I can incorporate my love of origami with my love of interior design. A lot of people make lampshades out of this style of origami, which I have looked into but haven't made anything yet. But when I saw that sculpture in the image above I knew a sculpture for above my bed was the solution.

I really like the form of the above image. It's not my work but I do like how the formed the origami after it was folded. I've done some folding on water colour paper where you can hold the shape by wetting the paper and forming it then letting the paper dry.

I'm thinking of making a sculpture with chipboard, cardboard and a fancy type of craft paper I got a blick the other day. All have different shades of brown and I think will look interesting when I overlap the different fold techniques.

One of the rooms in my new apartment that really needs work is the bedroom. I've put off the bedroom over and over for years, and a lot of the furniture is either IKEA or my childhood dresser painted orange. Needless to say it needs some love finally, its about time I pay some attention to the bedroom. I've been spending a lot of time finding inspiration photos and I have an idea of what I want the room to look like. Its just a matter of spending the time to achieve the look now.

The biggest thing that needs work in my bedroom is the bed. Right now I have a queen size comfortable bed on a metal bed frame with a bedskirt I bought for super cheap at bed bath and beyond. Below are images of inspiration for what I want the bed to look like.

This first photo is my inspiration for a bed frame. Being a very hands on girl I plan on making this bed myself, just with a few tweaks to fit my style and personality. My biggest problem with the bed frame is where to build it and I either need to buy the tools or rent them for this project. I've already modeled up the bed how I want to build it, and I've found a fabric I want to use to upholster the bed. It just needs to be built, hopefully sometimes this summer.

This photo is my inspiration for how I want the bedding to look. Right now I have a big thick comforter on my bed and as much as I love having it to curl up with I think its too bulky for my taste. I'm going to take the route of being a firm believer in compromising and trading in my huge thick comforter for a thin beautiful coverlet, or just some blanket thats much more clean lined and not so bulky. The throw at the end of this bed has kept me up at night because I love it so much. After much research I finally found one similar if not the exact throw. Its on my spreadsheet of stuff to buy but I'd like to build the bed frame before I start accessorizing the bed itself.

As for storage I right now have an IKEA dresser, and small bedside table. The other bedside table is my bedside table that I got when my family moved to the states from Canada when I was four. I have not taken care of this side table but for right now I need a table on that side of the bed so its in the room. The plan is to eventually have a longer rectangular side table with a small drawer on one side of the bed and a round side table on the other side of the bed. I'm not a huge fan of having furniture match too much so I like the compliment the round table and rectangular side table in similar wood tones play off each other. As for the dresser I have big aspirations for the dresser, through my blog reading I was introduced to a chest on chest and my mind has not gone back since. Below is the photo that made me fall in love. I'm not in a serious search for a chest on chest but if I ever come across one when the bank account can afford it I will jump on that.

First post in a couple years but an exciting post. Things are different for this Jess girl since she last posted. A lot has happened since that last post about that book Space Crafts 2. I not only graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Interior Design, but I have lived all over the country and worked some awesome jobs and meet some awesome people.

Most recently I was offered a job at VOA Associates in Chicago, Il. So with a great job offer, I packed up my life in Vermont and moved out here for this awesome job. I've got my own place with my puppy Andi, and the place is looking good but I've got lots of ideas and lots to do.

I have huge aspirations for this apartment and want to document my journey to an apartment worthy of being featured on a website. I've got lots of ideas and lots to do before I'm ready for that but here are some photos of where I'm at now, I'll start posting renderings and inspiration photos soon. Hopefully soon enough I'll start posting stuff about new things I've done to the apartment.

If any of you could tell by the rest of my blog I enjoy all types of art, architecture, installations, sculptures you name it. But architectural Installations are some of my favorite. I feel as if you have the free range with installations, and they can be whatever you want them to be. Architecture can have mathematics to it and has reason but with installations you can be free, do what you want, not have a purpose. One of the reasons I love Space Crafts 2 is because well its full of architectural installations. The book calls them hideouts and well they are, but they are all just so fun. Some of my favorite architecture is in this book and I love looking through the book.

For some people I think they have a hard time understanding some types of art but to me art that you look at and wonder is fulfilling and entertaining. You sit there and think, and thinking is fun. Instead of walking up to a piece and going on that's a male naked body you stand there and think what was the artist thinking, and then to just add to the fun you can think well this is what I think it means. It can mean anything you want. While some people might look through this book and think these are just weird pieces I believe its so much more then that, and that's one of the main reasons I love this book.

I personally would love to be an installation architect, and all my pieces of work have similarities to free hand, free spirit work. So Space Craft 2 is a great resources to get inspiration and ideas for just fun projects.

oh yea and Space Craft 1 is great too.Jess Goodwinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08614025066098194182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8232852358975499371.post-43376405082946648582010-10-06T14:25:00.003-04:002010-10-06T14:31:56.673-04:00Artist Profile: Anish Kapoor

"I have often said that I have nothing to say as an artist. So far since I've been doing this blog I've almost felt as if I have been traveling and learning about all this different architecture only I'm sitting in my pajamas and house coat and surfing the web instead of some waves in Australia. I could put together a whole list of places to go and places to see, they wouldn't be your normal tourist things I would go out of the way to find things.

Recently when I was in Vancouver I spent a whole day walking around the whole city finding all the sculptures in the city. I walked like two marathons and pulled something in my foot but it was all so rewarding and exciting to me to see all the art. I get the same way about architecture or furniture, or anything else. I've had talk with my younger brother about doing a road trip together across the states and I'm really excited about it but what I don't think he knows yet is that I'll be making little pit stops along the way to see some architecture and art I know about.

Well doing my research on different things to write about in this blog I've come across all sorts of different things about the Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. I already am in love with most of the architecture from the Olympics a couple of years ago and already had China on the top of my list of places to go just for that reason but now finding all these amazing buildings that have gone up, I almost need to go to China within the next month. I'm so excited and want to share it all with you, so tomorrow is going to be national expo day at Design and Such As.... It's a new holiday I'm declaring as the writer of this blog aka mayor of Suchas, and I'm sure you all will be just as excited as me once you read about all these amazing new buildings.

And considering that it is not 11:49 my time I got ten minutes till national expo day so get ready cause I'm starting with my home country. When most people think of maps you think of a road map on how to get places, but what if you thought of maps in a different context. If you Wikipedia maps this comes up.

"A map is a visual representation of an area-a symbolic depiction highlighting relationships between elements of that space such as objects, regions, and themes."

When I think of maps I think of symbolic ways of describing things. I love the ideas and possibility's of the idea of maps. One of my favorite maps is a map about Points, Line and Plane created by Ryan Gladhill. Its published in "Graphic Design The New Basics" and when I saw it, it immediately became my favorite map drawing. "The drawing is inspired by maps of population density, this digital drawing uses lines to describe shapes and volumes as well as to form dense splotches of texture The drawing originates from the center with a series of hexagons. As the hexagons migrate to the left, they become more open. as they migrate to the right they erode, becoming soft and organic."

For some you might still not get the idea of maps as a creative way of displaying and diagramming something so for a better understanding of this piece I have included the text from "Graphic Design The New Basics" on Point, Line, and Plane to better grasp the idea.

Point, line, and plane are the building blocks of design. From these elements, designers create images, icons, textures, patterns, diagrams, animations, and typographic systems.

Point A point marks a position in space. In pure geometric terms, a point is a pair of x, y coordinates. It has no mass at all. Graphically, however, a point takes form as a dot, a visible mark. A point can be an insignificant fleck of matter or a concentrated locus of power. It can penetrate like a bullet, pierce like a nail, or pucker like a kiss. A mass of points becomes texture, shape, or plane. Tiny points of varying size create shades of gray.

Line A line is an infinite series of points. Understood geometrically, a line has length, but no breadth. A line is the connection between two points, or it is the path of a moving point. A line can be a positive mark or a negative gap. Lines appear at the edges of objects and where two planes meet. Graphically, lines exist in many weights; the thickness and texture as well as the path of the mark determine its visual presence. Lines are drawn with a pen, pencil, brush, mouse, or digital code. They can be straight or curved, continuous or broken. When a line reaches a certain thickness, it becomes a plane. Lines multiply to describe volumes, planes, and textures.

Plane A plane is a flat surface exten– ding in height and width. A plane is the path of a moving line; it is a line with breadth. A line closes to become a shape, a bounded plane. Shapes are planes with edges. In vector–based software, every shape consists of line and fill. A plane can be parallel to the picture surface, or it can skew and recede into space. Ceilings, walls, floors, and windows are physical planes. A plane can be solid or perforated, opaque or transparent, textured or smooth.

Below are some of my favorite examples of maps. They are diagrammatic, Typographical, and many others, but most of all they are fun and exciting to look at. They also make you think and are not just right to the point.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I know you will too. It takes something so simple and well not really that attractive looking and makes something beautiful and so interesting. The piece is a floating pavilion in the Croatian art and architecture at the Venice Biennial. The pavilion was designed by a group of leading Croatian architects, responsible for the strong presence of Croatian architecture in the recent years. The tunnel of the catwalk, where the models walked out was formed to create a backdrop for the runway. It was Barretts first time collaborating with Aquili Alberg. The designer chose two of AquiliAlberg’s sculptural installations as a background for his latest fashion show.

The tunnel was also inspired by the designers AW10 collection that was
shown that highlights the designer's specific style by cutting garments up and splicing them together in new ways, horizontally, vertically and from back to front to create hybrids. Set against the sculptural backdrop designed by AquiliAlberg, the collection is also a nod to the myriad ways that architecture influences dress. AquiliAlberg studio’s designs are open to different interpretations. A series of sliced surfaces generate a complex, yet controlled volume, obtained through three-dimensional digitalisation.

The configuration gives the sculpture character, and wraparound lines create multi-faceted volume. Individual perception of the space, which has a kaleidoscope feel, differs according to physical position. This search for spatial complexity has its roots in Optical Art. Neil Barrett has always been fascinated and inspired by architecture, interiors and the crossover between these areas and fashion. In 2008 he opened his Concept Flagship Store in Tokyo, Japan, using architectural curves and layers.

I personally am studying paper folding and architecture and this piece is a perfect example of the form and duality of paper folding in architecture. The shapes and edges are right on, and the look is a perfect hit for me. I love these type of shapes in architecture and get so excited that we are able to create architecture like this. I think personally that not only are this form of architecture visually pleasing but also have so much behind the theory and thought of the design. Paper folding its self is an amazing art and to use it in architecture just blows me away. The idea of using fashion as an inspiration for this piece is also fun. There are so many inspirations out there in this world for architecture and to relate the two for a fashion use is fun and exciting.Jess Goodwinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08614025066098194182noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8232852358975499371.post-66570736819901886302010-09-12T15:28:00.002-04:002010-09-12T15:29:53.998-04:00Quote
" IMAGINE A ROOM WHERE A FLOOR BECOMES WALL BECOMES CEILING BECOMES WALL, AND FLOOR AGAIN...ROOM LOOPS THE LOOP"

-REM KOOLHAAS

Jess Goodwinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08614025066098194182noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8232852358975499371.post-54555183475015963982010-09-11T16:21:00.002-04:002010-09-11T16:24:20.349-04:00Super De DuperI love Super 8 films, and I especially love this film.
